Identity. It’s a deep word isn’t it? What comes to mind when you think of a person’s identity? Maybe you think of that little card adults carry around with their name and picture on it. Or maybe you think of someone’s name, what they look like, or what type of person they are. For me, identity carries the idea of what or who a person is consumed with. Something that a person invests their entire being in, so much so that they are characterized by it. Whether it be themselves, their significant other, friends, money, beauty, sports- anything really. Identity to me is what obviously controls a person’s life. Your identity is your worldview; it’s who you are; it can even determine how happy and fulfilled you are in this life.
So, who are you? What’s your identity? When someone meets you for the first time, is it obvious to them what consumes you? If you don’t know, let me give you a quick suggestion on where to place your identity. Actually, let me give you the best option for where to place your identity. This option for who or what you put your identity in could seal your eternal destiny. I’m talking about finding your identity in Jesus. Don’t stop reading! I know plenty of you have heard this a million times before. But just hear me out, ok? Finding your identity in Jesus Christ not only gives you eternal happiness in heaven someday, it also brings you fulfillment in life here on earth. How? Because of a miracle. A miracle that began with a heart- wrenching sacrifice that was birthed out of a Creator’s overwhelming love for His creation.
God, in His almighty power, sent His only, beloved Son from heaven to live on this earth. His purpose for coming was to release you and me from the eternal chains of wrong- of sin. Sin is anything we do that is against God and His perfect will for us. Jesus released us from having to pay a wretched punishment from sin by willingly dying on a cross through the vulgar practice of Roman crucifixion. He died hanging naked from a nasty, rugged tree by the nails pierced through His holy hands and feet–for me, for you, and for the entire human race! His followers buried Him in a tomb meticulously carved out of the side of a mountain. The incredible thing is, however, our Savior did not stay dead. God’s overwhelming power over death brought Jesus back to life three days after His brutal crucifixion. He rose from the dead offering a gift to each one of us that we don’t have to pay for and that we most definitely don’t deserve.
That gift is eternal life after death and complete fulfillment in our current life through Him. He’s holding out this gift in His nail-pierced hands to each and every one of us.
How do you receive it? You only need to admit that you are a hopeless sinner who’s lived in ultimate rebellion against God, believe in His unwavering sacrifice made for you, and willingly receive this gift that makes you live the way He wants you to out of an overflow of love for Him and thankfulness toward Him. Discover your identity in Him. Admitting, believing, and forever receiving His gift, as well as living for Him, is a small sacrifice compared to what Jesus underwent for us. Finding your identity-your consuming power- in Him is a rewarding endeavor that leads to fulfillment here and eternal bliss with Him in heaven someday. He who gave me hope when I was hopeless, rest when I was weary, and strength when I was weak is calling me, along with every other human being that walks on this earth by name to come rest in Him. To come find our identity. Will you answer the call?
So what’s your identity? I hope and pray that you’ve found it in Christ. He wants you to find your identity in Him no matter what you’ve done, who you are, and where you came from. His sacrifice covers all that. Be filled! Find hope! I can tell you, it’s all worth it. So pick up the phone. Answer His call. Find your identity in the only One who will satisfy you.
